Ideas for a short break in a self-catering holiday cottage

You don’t have to book holiday accommodation for a week or a fortnight. Sometimes you might fancy making the most of a sunny weekend or perhaps you just need some relaxation time for you and your partner, or the whole family.

Many owners are quite happy to rent out their properties for short stays of two or three days which can be all you need to celebrate a romantic milestone, a family birthday or to recharge the batteries.

Whether you want a coastal location, a secluded spot, somewhere close to Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty or a place to stay close to the hustle and bustle of a major city, there will be a holiday home which meets your needs.

Here are some of your options when you decide to take a short break in the UK or Ireland:

Weekend stay

Most weekend breaks are over three nights – the Friday as well as Saturday and Sunday – although some holiday home owners will rent their property for a two-night weekend. There is a vast range of accommodation available for self-catering weekend cottage breaks, everything from a converted Gothic church in Somerset to a large Scottish country house with space for up to 25 people.

Many of these properties are close to tourist attractions or in areas with spectacular countryside or coastline, such as the Cotswolds and leafy Suffolk in England and the stunning regions of Pembrokeshire and Denbighshire in Wales.

Three-night weekend

You will find that many self-catering cottages and log cabins can be booked for short breaks during the low season periods of the year. Whether they are available is down to the discretion of the owner and depends on the level of demand at the time. Even in peak periods you might find the property of your dreams is free to rent for two or three nights. All manner of lovely log cabins, cottages and apartments can be sourced when you look for three-night weekend breaks in the UK and Ireland. Many of them allow pets to stay although it is always best to check before booking.

Midweek break

Weekends are, of course, the most popular times to take short breaks with people more likely to have time off from work. But it often pays to go away for a midweek holiday with special offers often up for grabs because owners want their properties to be occupied as often as possible. You can often save a lot of money by taking midweek self-catering holiday accommodation, whether you want a romantic break, a family holiday or to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The other advantage of going away during the week is that tourist attractions and leisure facilities will not be so busy, particularly outside the peak holiday season.

One Night

It may be that you only have one night free for the shortest of short breaks. This is no problem for some owners of holiday accommodation, particularly at off-peak times of the year. There are a range of properties available for one night, many with luxury features such as hot tubs or swimming pools and others with a rustic quality where you are based out in the wilds. Short cottage breaks for one night can be rented throughout the UK.
